I am a passionate backend developer with over 15 years of hands-on experience, deeply rooted in software architecture and coding. My journey with computers started in childhood, and I began exploring coding in my early teenage years. While my expertise leans toward backend development, I have a solid grasp of frontend and DevOps, allowing me to build well-rounded solutions.
PHP holds a special place in my heart, not as a blind defender, but as someone who appreciates its strengths and will gladly correct misconceptions about it. My strength lies in translating business needs into robust and scalable software architectures, ensuring that technology serves its purpose effectively.
At Jobilla Oy, I gained the most knowledge so far, with extensive hands-on experience in open-source technologies. I worked on numerous integrations with external systems and deepened my expertise in CI/CD. This is the place where, after many years, I could finally focus on what I love the most: backend development, while continuously striving to improve and refine my skills in that area.
After moving from Belgium to Finland, I continued working with Webdoos to ensure a smooth transition for their larger projects. At the same time, I started gathering my own clients, building company websites as a full-stack engineer. This period allowed me to deepen my experience with CSS and JavaScript beyond what I had encountered at Webdoos. Additionally, I gained valuable insights into the non-coding aspects of running a business, which I found both challenging and enjoyable.
I started at Webdoos as a trainee during my studies and later returned as a full-stack engineer, building websites and customer projects. I worked on maintaining an in-house CMS for building customer webpages while also developing separate systems for managing doctors' professional needs in Belgium. During this time, I gained broad experience and discovered my preference for backend development, though clear role distinctions weren’t as common as they are today.
As my first professional role, I started in addionton to sole developer maintaining a large system for renting serviced apartments, covering all aspects of the business. It was a massive, all-encompassing project that kept the company running. Looking back, the code was a nightmare, but it was an invaluable learning experience in managing complex systems.
I earned a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) in Informatics, gaining a strong foundation in software development and computer science. My studies provided essential technical and problem-solving skills, which I have continuously built upon throughout my career.
I studied Informatics with a focus on Applied Informatics in high school. Alongside technical subjects, I also gained knowledge in accounting and company management, which provided a broader understanding of business operations.
The list below represents an extensive collection of technologies and tools I have encountered throughout my career. Some of them I know in-depth, while others I have only explored on the surface. If you have questions about any specific skill, feel free to ask me in person.
I initially built this billing system to gain a deeper understanding of customer management and invoicing. The system allows users to manage customers, products, and services, generate and send invoices, and export reports for accounting. What started as a learning project turned into a practical solution that is still in use today by my father and a few friends.
After realizing that tracking budgets through bank statements and Excel wasn’t efficient, I designed and built BuMaSy as a personal solution. It provided a single place for me and my wife to manage finances, make budget predictions, and generate reports to assess affordability. While early versions had their imperfections, it has since evolved into a reliable tool that I’m glad I invested time in, however honestly, it could use a good refactoring!
Beyond larger projects, I’ve built numerous smaller tools to improve daily life and automate tasks. Examples include a Shopping List app for easy list sharing, scripts to organize local and NAS storage, and automation scripts for controlling electricity in the house (though I no longer use them).
